Optical fibres
Since when, by mid-70s, optical fibre made its first appearance in telecommunications field, it was immediately understood that its use would signify an important increase in data transmission capacity (i.e. the quantity of transmitted data measured in bit per second) and the distance covered by the signals as well.
In the last few years the request for high speed services has increased considerably and, at the same time, new types of optical fibres have been introduced in the market in order to satisfy the request for larger and larger bandwidth as much that we can affirm that now there is no field in research and technology in which we cannot find optical fibre transmission as a considerable application.
The speed of development of these technologies, the need of improvements and the request for higher and higher performances, make this sector among the most interesting ones and it is a clear challenge for the years to come. |
